VGIK85

Alexander NOVIKOV: VGIKit is to be for a long time.

The state of the educational system and the cultural degree of the country are interdependent. The more acute problems of education affect the state of art. Whats going on, in particular, with cinema art? The reply should be found in the question about the state of the modern cinema education. The rector of the institute tells about VGIK, its achievements and overcoming complications.

VGIK: REFLECTIONS (I)

Marlen KHUTSIYEV, Alexei BATALOV, Viktor LISAKOVICH, Natalia RYAZANTSEVA, Boris KRISHTUL, Vladimir UTILOV

VGIKs masters tell about the educational process, problems and achievements of the modern cinema education and its perspectives.

EISENSTEINS READINGS

We must move not to the censure of Pudovkin, but to the extraction of use from the present topic... Two Sergei EISENSTEINS lectures about the movie Storm over Asia, 1928.

There are few published materials about the beginning of Eisensteins teaching activity. These lectures give an idea not only of Eisenstein-teacher but first and foremostof a theorist. Some of Eisensteins main articles written at the end of the 1920-s contained the ideas of these lectures.

A PROCESS

Olga ARTEMYEVA. When heroes remove to eternity.

The author observes the transformation of the cultural hero in the modern literature and cinema having taken as a principle the type of Jerome David Salindgers hero.

Elena VINOGRADOVA. Motion metaphysics, or the asphalt movies of 2003.

2003 was a year of road movie in contemporary Russian cinema. This article shows us how films like Boomer and Book thieves reveal the topicstaying out of time and space, the crisis of humaneness.

Andrei KHRZHANOVSKY, Yuri ARABOV, Sergei SOLOVYOV, Vsevolod SHILOVSKY, Evgenii GROMOV

A THEME FOR EXPLORATION

Vladimir VINOGRADOV. Eisensteins theories in the context of the postmodern strategy.

The author reveals indirect and immediate influence of Eisensteins theoretic elaborations on the theories of structuralism and gives particular attention to the works of Julia Kristeva and Jil Delez.

Viktoria LEVITOVA. An existential essay on Malle and Truffaut.

The author considers the new wave cinema from the point of view of the existential philosophy, basing on Louis Malles and Franois Truffauts films.

Andrey BUROV. The last full (cinema) photo session of Marilyn Monroe.

The author uses the pictures of Marilyn Monroe to ponder if cinema and photography get close to reality in expressing and rendering of human emotional and physical states.

A WORKSHOP

These fellows will have to go out to production. S.Eisensteins workshop, 1935.

Biographies of the students from this Eisensteins workshop were different. Some of them worked in documentaries, some were repressed and some became famous... This is a very emotional document reflecting the relations between Eisenstein and his students, the masters individuality and his colorful ironic manner.

Abram ROOM. [About cutting thinking]. A lecture on the directors academy level faculty, 1936.

One of the key figures in cinema of 1920-s, Room had been teaching in VGIK for a long time but this is his only lecture to survive in VGIKs archives. Here the director tells the students about film-editing.

Grigory KOZINTSEV. [To hear the rumble of time]. A lecture on the directors faculty, 1957.

The lecture is actually a story about the shooting of Don Quixote (1957) and a directors interpretation of the novel of Cervantes. It is possible that precisely during this lecture Kozintsevs first thoughts about screen adaptation of Hamlet appeared. Some fragments of this verbatim report later were included in the directors explication of Hamlet (1964).

DOCUMENTS AND COMMENTS

Five-Year Plan by frames. A brief characteristic of GIKs work, 1934.

The letter V added to the institutes name after its reorganization into an academy. The institute had been keeping this status for four years. The project of reorganization and the report of GIKs work give the idea of what caused this reorganization, and what was the whole situation in GIK during these years.

In our conditions the global role is to be given to the problems of education. A shorthand report of the directors faculty meeting, 1955.

Years 19551959 were the golden ones in VGIKs history. The beginning of the Thaw was followed with changes in all cinema spheres. VGIK wasnt an exception. The discussion of the educational program matches both intellectual and emotional atmosphere of the institute. The speakers are A.Dovzhenko, L.Kuleshov, I.Kopalin and others.

TOWARDS INTERPRETATION OF A FILM

Kseniya KURBATOVA. Time in the figurative structure of Marlen Khutsiyevs Zastava Ilicha.

The article is dedicated to the analysis of the authors and historical time in Khutsievs film.

Yuliya ZAITSEVA. State of balance.

The author writes about the image in Federico Fellinis I Vitteloni.

Georgii DARAKHVELIDZE. Cinema-eye.

Michael Powells Peeping Tom is considered from its visual aesthetic.

DEBUTES

Welcome, or No Trespassing. The theoretic part of Elem Klimovs diploma film.

Tenderness. The theoretic part of Elyer Ishmukhamedovs diploma film.

The fact is that the first film success of both directors was connected with their diploma films. In theoretic parts of the films both of them write about preproduction and the difficulties which they were overcoming during the shooting.

LETTERS FROM THE PAST

Lev KULESHOV: There is no GIK without Eisenstein. Correspodence between L.Kuleshov and S.Eisenstein. 19231947.

Lev Kuleshov and Sergei Eisenstein were connected by the long-term team-work. It was Kuleshov who invited Eisenstein to work in VGIK. The submitted letters, telegrams and some other documents once again prove that correspondence is the most immediate and exact evidence of the past, of the nuances in human relations.

Evgeny MIGUNOV. About, a propos and relating to

Memoirs of Evgeny Migunov (19212004), an animator, have been already published in Kinovedcheskie zapiski, 62. Those were dedicated to his education in VGIK during World War II. And here are some notes about pre-war education, teachers and people who were on the same course with him.
